Built as a residence in 1919, this bungalow is situated in the pines and oaks of West Gurley Street in Prescott. The property hadn’t been touched in years, so that meant nobody had ruined it with a less-that-ideal remodel job. Energy-efficiency improvements to the building included super-insulating the attic space and replacing non-historic windows. We enclosed the front porch in historic“summer room” fashion with matching columns and car-siding paneling. Required parking spaces were created with a concrete and split-cobbled paver to allow existing tree roots to breathe. A planted boulder wall and a brightly colored stucco retaining wall integrate the architecture with the site, and make Americans with Disabilities Act-access to the front entrance elegant. Predominantly native and well adapted exotics, wind sculpture, water features and water harvesting rain chains flesh out this commercial landscape. It functions as a model of what is possible for small spaces. |
