residence in the prescott bouldersPrescott , Arizona This residence is an oasis for birds, butterflies and people. Located on a hillside of granite-strewn outcroppings known as the Prescott Boulders, the site strongly guided the design. Structures were designed to integrate existing boulder features and views. Our site plan and design were created before any earthwork occurred, enabling us to utilize boulder topography and salvage plants. The entry courtyard's large boulder outcrop was worked into a water feature and the headwaters of a stream flowing in a small waterfalls under an bridge to a small, plant-lined pool. An adjacent patio in local chocolate flagstone offers a quiet place to sit and listen to resident frogs, frequent visitors to this rehabitated site. The backyard offered more boulders a wonderful view of area landmark, Thumb Butte. We used an outcrop near the kitchen doorway to create an herb garden, with stone steps descending into the secluded, walled courtyard. A graceful shade structure is entwined with trumpet creeper vine to provide dappled sunlight and fragrant flowers. A simpler water feature anchors one end of the patio and provides water music. The boulder-lined walkway leading around to the entry is a colorful swath of penstemons and other native wildflowers, plus autumn sage, butterfly bush and blue fescue. |
