embry-riddle aeronautical universityPrescott, Arizona A new visitor center provided impetus for our design of an entry to the university's 539-acre Prescott campus. Working closely with Kelly Wise Civil Engineers, we created layout alignment options integrating multiple roads into a way-finding roundabout with the new visitor center on the axis. They align structures and roadways, redirect circulation and create gathering spaces while integrating our campus landscape master plan. The visually engaging entry emphasizes the center as a social and architectural focal point. A tall monument sign surrounded by trees, turf and color beds demarcates the new entrance and proves low-water-use plants can be used to create a strong, lush corporate expression. Bold massings of desert willow and manzanita line the median along with symmetrical clusters of Italian cypress. Transition background plants help blend color beds, turf and signscape with the site's native chaparral. Spaces for gathering emerged around the buildings when walkways were redirected. Our finish grading here and along the entry included landscape and hardscape referencing the master plan and existing campus elements. |
