tucson gateway design competition

sponsored by city of tucson and the arizona dept. of transportation
tucson, az.
2002

The competition was created to generate designs for an iconic entry for the city at the interchange of an interstate highway and busy downtown arterial road. Submitted proposals came from architects, civil and structural engineers, landscape architects, urban planners and visual artists. The contest came from a city arts council desire to mark Tucson as the CanaMex gateway to the United States.

Our design was born primarily from Tucson’s identity as a bike friendly city. The entry allowed for universal, multi-modal crossing of a very busy, inhuman intersection while creating a powerful entry statement. Architectural inspiration included the building styles of people who have inhabited the area for hundreds of years, including Puebloan Indian cultures and the Maya.
